Yarra Trams - East Preston Depot
Since 2004, the East Preston Depot of Yarra Trams has saved 424,800L of water annually through its ‘Green Depot’ pilot program, primarily by reusing rain and storm water and cutting back on potable consumption.

Tank-harvested rainwater, captured from the Depot’s shed roof, is used to flush toilets and to wash trams. Water used during the washing process has decreased by 700L per day by using pressure washers and solar heating - helping to conserve the Depot’s precious, harvested water.

Savings have also been achieved by installing waterless urinals, drought tolerant landscaping and tap flow restrictors throughout the depot and by educating staff to change workplace practices.

With water savings one part of a broader Green Depot plan, which also incorporates energy and waste efficiencies, the Yarra Trams East Preston Depot has become a demonstration site for environmental innovation within the transport industry and has inspired a number of local sites to follow its lead.

WINNER - Small Business

Fishprint P/L
Fishprint printing company has employed a ‘waterless’ printing process since 2005, totally eliminating the need for water use in the printing press – saving 46,000L of water annually, or more than 340 bathtubs.*

Simply turning off the printing press tap saves 22,000L; recycling printing plate wash water for the developing processor saves a further 24,000L.

Waterless printing has other benefits, too, eliminating toxic air emissions from dampening-related volatile organic compounds (VOCs), common in standard printing presses.

Plus, if Fishprint clients choose 100 percent recycled paper, they save 13 large trees and 31,780L of water for every tonne used.

Fishprint has gained Good Environmental Choice Australia accreditation – ISO 14024 - Australia’s highest level of environmental accreditation.

FINALISTS

Crown Entertainment Complex

Crown Entertainment Complex has conserved more than 67ML of potable water annually, since implementing the recommendations of a Water Management Plan developed in conjunction with South East Water – equivalent to 27 Olympic-sized swimming pools.**

Water wise measures are now in place across the complex’s casino, hotel, ballroom, cinemas, restaurants, bars and entertainment venues. These include flow restrictors in public and staff toilet hand basins, and hotel room showers; water recycling systems within the Crown laundry; a bin wash system that incorporates high pressure water sprays; and a filtration and reverse osmosis system that treats cooling tower bleed-off for reuse in toilet flushing.

Water meters and wastewater meters have also been installed to monitor the efficiency of new practices.

Investa Property Group

Investa Property Group is the first company in Australia to publicly commit to water usage intensity targets, to reduce consumption across its Victorian portfolio by 25 per cent in three years. It has already achieved savings of 26 per cent in two years, equivalent to almost 49 Olympic sized swimming pools.**

Across its properties, savings have been achieved through waterless urinal systems; attaching water flow restrictors to taps, showers and basins; remotely monitoring cooling towers; upgrading toilets to dual flush; incorporating Hydrocell water retention foam into grass areas; and centrally monitoring water consumption via electronic sub-metering systems.

Investa is the first property portfolio owner in Australia to rate its buildings using the NABERS water-rating scheme set by the Department of Energy Utilities and Sustainability, achieving an above-average market rating.

* Calculation based on average bathtub size of 135L
** Calculations based on FINA-standard Olympic-sized swimming pool at 2.5ML.
