WINNER
Heatherdale Tennis Club
| Heatherdale Tennis Club is setting a water wise example for the sport, replacing its eight En Tout Cas courts with a Classic Clay surface and saving about 3,400KL of water per year – equating to more than one Olympic sized swimming pool.* Classic Clay (manufactured by Grassman Australia) provides a playing surface similar to En Tout Cas but does not require regular watering – En Tout Cas courts each use around 400,000L of water per year, or more than 2,900 bathtubs.** Apart from wanting to reduce water consumption, the club was conscious that En Tout Cas particles were being washed into local waterways after the courts were hosed before and after every set; Classic Clay does not have any turbid run off. With the project now complete with assistance from a Smart Water grant, players are enjoying the benefits of the Classic Clay courts and knowing they are cutting water usage and protecting the water quality and eco system of the nearby waterway. But it doesn’t stop there. Gaining a reputation as a water wise club means that other changes are on the agenda, such as the introduction of dual flush toilets in the clubrooms. |

FINALIST
Mambourin Enterprises
Mambourin Enterprises, a not for profit adult training and support service, is supplying water wise plants to help the Sunshine community make responsible environmental decisions. This initiative is influencing local water savings of more than 1.4ML per year – equivalent to one full bathtub in almost 10,400 homes.**
As part of a training program for adults with a disability, the Sunshine-based service is propagating and selling water wise plants at its impressive Community Water Wise Plant Market nursery.
Launched in January 2005, the 10-year program offers plants that are suitable for the average small suburban garden and only need to be watered in extreme temperatures. A simple label system gives the plants a rating from 1-5 ‘water drips’.
The market’s on-site garden is maintained using tank water and is designed to effectively demonstrate to the community the benefits of having a water wise garden.
Mambourin aims to sell another 3,000 plants over the next eight years, under its motto: ‘If ya can’t eat it, and have to water it, we won’t grow or sell it’.
