Syndal South Primary School

Thanks to water-wise initiatives undertaken by staff and students at Syndal South Primary School in Mount Waverley, water usage has dropped by 650kL in the last year, despite a small rise in student numbers.

An accredited Waste Wise School and Sustainable School, Syndal South Primary School converted all toilets to dual flush in 2004 and permanently removed six student toilets that were not needed. They also installed two 10,000 litre rainwater tanks to water the extensive garden and a 250 litre rainwater tank to serve the free range chickens.

All exotic plants were removed from the garden and replaced with water wise natives, encouraging native wildlife and requiring less water. All gardens are heavily mulched.

“Through water wise gardening, we have been able to maintain the natural beauty of our school gardens during water restrictions,” says Arnold Vander Werf, Principal Syndal South Primary School. “Our staff, students and the wider school community have banded together as a united front towards ongoing water sustainability.”

And, as part of the Brain Food Program, students bring a bottle of water to drink throughout the day which also reduces water wastage from drinking taps.
