Melbourne’s Vietnamese community is putting in a big effort to reduce water consumption thanks to Kim, whose community work has inspired more than 25ML of water savings (25 Olympic sized swimming pools) and the collection of 60,000L of rainwater.

“Mainstream environmental promotions were not successfully reaching the Vietnamese community due to language barriers and cultural differences,” says Ms Kim Thien Truong of inner city Hotham Hill. “With water-saving so important, we needed to fill the gap and teach the community sustainable behaviour.”

Kim is a volunteer with Environment Victoria and Ambassador for its ‘Nha Dep’ or ‘Beautiful Home’ program, which conducts household water-use assessments and recommends the use of water-saving devices. It also ensures people are aware of water restrictions and bill rebates.

Kim was part of City West Water’s ‘Showerhead Exchange Program’ where 350 local Vietnamese people exchanged their showerheads for water-saving nozzles in one morning; she is now on its Customer and Community Engagement Committee.

“The results are very rewarding, especially when someone sends me a copy of their water bill so I can share in their success!” says Ms Kim Thien Truong.
