A 654kL habitat wetland - which serves as an ‘outdoor classroom’, is designed to intercept urban stormwater and produces 100 per cent water savings - forms the highlight of the Ecolinc Science and Technology Innovations Centre.

Since opening in January 2005, more than 1,500 students, teachers and community members have visited the Bacchus Marsh education centre, which strongly promotes water sustainable practices and techniques.

“As well as working with Moorabool Shire Council to develop community awareness of water conservation, we provide curriculum programs to a number of local schools as part of Western Water’s ‘Waves’ Schools Education Program,” says Suzanne Clark, Manager Ecolinc Science and Technology Innovations Centre.

Established by the Department of Education and Training, the Centre’s building management system allows users to monitor water and energy use within the facility, such as the two 22.5kL rainwater tanks used to flush the internal toilets and water the horticultural facility.

The toilets flush 8kL of water per year compared to 28kL by single flush toilets and the drip irrigation to the vegetable garden uses 58kL of water per year compared to 365kL by manual hose watering.
