Boroondara City Council

Boroondara City Council saves approximately 380kL of water each year from a remediation wash down bay and two 45,000 litre rainwater tanks that were installed in 2002/03 at North Balwyn’s Freeway Golf Course.

The wash down bay uses a remediation process to treat water used to wash golf course machinery and spray equipment. This water is reused to wash the machines and fill chemical spray tanks. Treating the wastewater also means that less contaminants escape the site and enter the sewer.

Meanwhile, rainwater collected in the tanks is used to fill spray rigs, mix fertilisers and irrigate young trees.

“As a result of these two initiatives, potable water consumption at the Freeway Golf Course has fallen 60 per cent, since June 2003” says Boroondara Mayor, Cr Jack Wegman. “We are delighted that they are quickly meeting their objectives to minimise the use of potable water at the site and ensure that water is discarded in a lawful and sustainable way.”
