What is the WELS Scheme?
The Water Efficient Labelling and Standards (WELS) Scheme is an Australia-wide rating and labelling system to help consumers select water efficient products at the point of sale.

WELS labels can help you select a water efficient model if you are looking for a new...
  • clothes washing machine
  • dishwasher
  • flow controller
  • toilet (lavatory equipment)
  • shower
  • tap (for tap equipment intended for use over a kitchen sink, bathroom basin, laundry tub or ablution trough), or
  • urinal equipment.
WELS labels are being phased in, and started to appear in shops in July 2006 ... From 1 January 2008 all new products must display a WELS label (with the exception of flow controllers, where registration of products is voluntary).

What does a WELS label look like?
The WELS Water Rating label has two main features:
  • A star rating that gives a quick comparative assessment of the model's water efficiency
  • A water consumption figure that provides an estimate of the water consumption of the product based on its tested water consumption
Labels will display from 1 to 6 stars, with more stars meaning the product is more water efficient. Some products may also be labelled with a 'Zero Star Rated' label, which indicates that the product is either not water efficient or does not meet basic performance requirements.
