Aquatain anti-evaporation film is a silicone based liquid which self-spreads across a water body and reduces evaporation by forming a monolayer (one molecule thick) on the surface.
Silicones are used in a wide range of applications to repel water. Apart from many industrial uses, silicones are used in cosmetics (eg in lipsticks, hair conditioners and wrinkle creams) and also in food applications (eg in non-stick sprays and as additives to reduce froth by commercial bakeries).
By themselves, silicones do not spread on water particularly well. With the addition of suitable surfactants and other additives, we have been able to dramatically enhance the ‘spreadability’ of the silicone, enabling it to self-spread across the water surface.
Essentially, when Aquatain is poured on the water, the molecules have a natural tendency to align themselves in a single layer on the surface. Aquatain will keep thinning out across the surface until the monolayer is formed.

- easy to apply either by hand, by an automatic dosing unit or by aerial application
- self-spreads on the surface – even against significant wave or wind resistance
- if disturbed, it will re-form quickly, thereby maintaining the integrity of the film
- resistant to high temperatures, oxidation and ultra violet breakdown
- non-hazardous and can be safely applied to drinking water bodies
- very low application rates are required
- costs a fraction of other evaporation control methods such as floating membranes.
- remains effective for up to 2 weeks.
