Home Saving water in... Primary Industries Agriculture Rice Case studies Coleambally Demonstration Farm
Best practice in water use efficiency at the Coleambally Demonstration Farm, NSW
The Coleambally (Murrumbidgee Shire Community Experimental Demonstration) Farm has been used to demonstrate improved methods of irrigation. A new federally funded project is underway to demonstrate state of the art irrigation techniques and technology at the farm to encourage farmers to improve water use efficiency within rice-based farming systems. The project involves establishing a paddock layout that will demonstrate "lateral beds in bays" utilising new autosteering technology such as bay automation and flume gate water metering devices. It is anticipated that this system will save approximately 1.6 ML of water per ha per year.
This project has just commenced, with funding announced in March 2005 as part of the demonstration round of Community Water Grants, through the $2 billion Australian Government Water Fund.
