Linear Move Irrigators: Auscott Midkin, Moree

Julie O’Halloran, Cotton CRC, NSW DPI, Moree

Auscott Midkin is currently undertaking studies to asses the efficiency of linear move irrigators as an alternative to furrow irrigation. It is believed that there will be big labour savings as there is a reduced need for tractors to prepare a seed bed if flat farming is successful. There are problems associated with linear move irrigators such as straight steering, soil compaction and cutting into rows, and possible problems with infiltration rates.

Auscott Midkin will continue to monitor fields using linear move irrigation to confirm benefits of this system in terms of water use and crop yield.
