Alternative irrigation systems
Robert Collins, ‘Merrowie’, Hillston
This study compared alternative irrigation systems (furrow irrigation, lateral move, and drip irrigation) over a two year period. It was found that system performance depends on soil type, system configuration, capacity for supply and drainage, management and ground cover and most crucially the uniformity of moisture held in the soil.
In this case drip irrigation proved most effective with the highest crop yield (8 bales/ha) and best water use efficiency (96%). Detailed information on the cost of the various irrigation methods is provided.
