Research behind the GreySmart product ranking system remains the intellectual property of Arris, copyright 2009. The AGWR (Australian Guidelines for Water Recycling) have been used to develop an assessment system for domestic detergent and cleaning products to ensure they are safe for the environment.

The site aims to improve the communication of risks and benefits associated with alternative water source use and so improve protection of human and environmental health. The site also helps to ensure effective water quality management so that other alternative water sources are not degraded through increased use of greywater onsite.

Depending on the severity of the drought over next few years, the GreySmart tools provide an important ‘safety net’ for Melbourne gardeners. This is generally considered a non-financial return on investment, but it does highlight the Melbourne water retailer’s efforts to improve quality of living by enabling the development of attractive gardens that also support energy efficiency. Arguably both of these factors result in increased property values.
