About GreySmart

GreySmart is a project funded under Round 6 of the Smart Water Fund, managed by Arris Pty Ltd and Atura Pty Ltd and hosted by savewater!® Alliance.

The website is designed to help Victorians understand greywater reuse, in terms of greywater availability, uses and technologies and to provide necessary guidance on appropriate household cleaning and personal care products when recycling greywater.

GreySmart aims to improve householders’ awareness of alternative water sources around the home.

The objectives of the GreySmart project are to:

  • Educate householders about benefits of integrating various water sources to reduce residential demands on potable water supplies;
  • Improve new/alternative water source uptake and ensure their efficient, safe and sustainable use;
  • Improve water security, quality of life and water sensitive urban design by supporting choice at the household level to help residences secure water and maintain their quality of life through a shift towards sustainable water-sensitive urban design;
  • Support “GreySmart” choices by enabling householders to make informed decisions about the products they choose to use in the home which may end up in their grey water and urban surroundings;
  • Protect human & environmental health through improved communication of risks and benefits associated with alternative water source use;
  • Ensure effective water quality management so that other recycled water sources are not degraded through increased use of greywater onsite (e.g. reduced volumes of water recycled from sewage effluent); and to
  • Provide scientifically sound, reliable information on greywater and its safe and efficient use.

The GreySmart website provides a step by step approach to help householders assess their greywater options and to select a greywater system suitable for their needs.

The selection methodology identifies ‘Greysmart’ products and is underpinned by the Australian Guidelines for Water Recycling and a detailed environmental risk assessment which determines if greywater will be suitable for use on the garden. This complete greywater management package will provide you with the information necessary to manage the risks associated with greywater used around the house.

The original project has been expanded to take into consideration Australia wide weather factors therefore enabling the tools to be used across Australia. GreySmart™ is a registered trademark.
