Greywater systems

The following information applies to residents in Victoria. For general information on greywater systems, click here.

Diverting Greywater:
  • You do not need permission to temporarily divert greywater from the shower and washing machine away from the sewerage system during warm, dry weather for immediate use. The householder is liable if the greywater threatens public health. This includes ensuring that greywater does not run off your property into the street or adjoining properties
  • Greywater must not be stored for longer than 24 hours.
  • You must follow the EPA guidelines and alterations to plumbing pipes requires a licensed plumber.

Treating and Reusing wastewater from single households:
  • There are systems available which you can choose to treat and store your greywater and use it as a long term valuable resource to meet some of your water needs. These systems treat greywater to a standard so it can be stored indefinitely and for use inside the house, but not for human consumption.
  • These systems are usually priced at over $5000 and will need to be installed by a plumber with prior approval from the EPA. A septic tank permit from your local council is also required.
