Water saving lawns

A key component to many gardens is the lawn. Whether it is a functional play area or an ornamental feature, there are many ways to make it more water efficient.

Watersavinglawns
A healthy, well maintained lawn is often not only attractive but functional providing a clear, open space in which to walk, play and relax. While, to some gardeners the lawn is primarily ornamental - complementing other plantings, softening hard surfaces, separating and defining distinctive features, or unifying the garden as a whole.

Overall design

The aim when designing the home garden lawn is to achieve as many desired qualities as possible while maintaining efficient watering practises during establishment as well as long term maintenance. For best results consider the following:
  • Sunlight - To grow a healthy lawn sunlight is essential, particularly in the Winter.
  • Appearance - Texture, colour, height of cut, etc. all determine appearance.
  • Uses - Purely ornamental, a play area for the children or an exercise area for pets.
