Results

The following savings have been achieved:
  • Using dam water for cooling applications saves about 168,000kL per year of mains water. As this water is recycled, an equivalent amount is diverted from the trade waste stream. This saves about $214,000 on mains water bills and trade waste charges per year.
  • Using dam water to supplement mains water in the cooling towers saves about 18,000kL per year of mains water. This equates to a saving of about $13,000 per year in mains water bills, and $10,000 per year in trade waste charges.
  • The average water consumption per tonne of steel produced is being reduced all the time. In January 2002, 0.6374kL of water was consumed per tonne of steel produced. This was reduced to 0.58kL/tonne by September 2002, which is a reduction of approximately 10% in 9 months.
