Water conservation initiatives at the Broadmeadows site are driven by the Corporate Environmental Policy, and Environmental Improvement Plan. The setting of yearly water efficiency targets has provided a strategic direction for reducing water use. The main areas of water reductions have been through monitoring and tracking water use, improvements in the painting process, and general education of staff.
Background
Ford Australia is one of four car manufacturers operating in Australia, providing cars for the Australian and overseas market. There are two key manufacturing sites; the engine, stamping and casting plant in Geelong, and the assembly plant in Broadmeadows.
Ford Broadmeadows employs 1,500 people on a 90-hectare site.
After Ford Australia achieved ISO 14001 certification in December 1997, the company worked closely with the Victorian EPA to achieve “Accredited Licensee” status for both air and water emissions at the Broadmeadows site. As part of this process, an Environment Improvement Plan (EIP) was developed, in partnership with the EPA and the local Broadmeadows community. Commitment to water conservation at Broadmeadows is made through the EIP and Ford Australia’s Environmental Policy, which refers to resource conservation.
